These role models... Lead

"I love and am curious about other people’s lives and I am explicitly a voyeur. That’s why I started writing: because I wanted to know what’s it like to be a Jewish Chinese guy or an old black woman or a white professor or whatever."

Zadie Smith

Writer Zadie Smith - her leadership comes in her approach to trying to understand the world around her (multiculturalism, feminism, class etc.) through a non-political, sympathetic approach to human beings. Whenever I hear her speak or read anything she's written, to me the world feels like a wonderful place.

"Leadership is an an action many can take, not a position that only a few can hold. Leadership is about taking personal and social responsibility to work with others for common goals. Leadership is about the practice of values that engage diverse community members and groups in working together effectively. "

Paul Schmitz

From former drug dealer to Obama’s advisor on community solutions, Paul Schmitz is passionate about leadership and its role on the frontline solving community problems. This isn’t leadership as we know it: ‘top of the food chain’, position of power stuff, but leadership as an action that many can take.

"If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door."

Harvey Milk

Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician who became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk served almost 11 months in office and was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance for the city. On November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated.

"Those of you lucky enough to have your lives, take them with you. However, leave the limbs you've lost. They belong to me now."

Beatrix Kiddo

Beatrix Kiddo is the protagonist of the “Kill Bill” films. I admire her confidence and self-belief when it comes to making life changing decisions. Her determination to better herself , her straight talking and no-nonsense approach. Her ability to forgive and make peace with Bill ( before killing him). And her unabashed love for her daughter, with whom she strives for a better, more peaceful existence. And also that amazing yellow cat suit with Go –Faster stripes!
